Cutnall Green C of E Primary School

PSHE

We want every pupil to grow up healthy, happy, safe and prepared for life in modern Britain.

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) helps children understand themselves, build positive relationships and make informed choices about their wellbeing and future.

Relationships and Health Education is a key part of PSHE and is statutory in primary schools.

This includes learning about:

  • Families and friendships
  • Respect and kindness
  • Personal safety
  • Physical and mental wellbeing

All content is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive way.

What children learn

Throughout the year, we focus on Relationships, Living in the Wider World and Health and Wellbeing. Through this approach, we will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online. We give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.

How we teach PSHE

We teach PSHE through a structured, whole-school approach called Jigsaw.

  • Weekly PSHE lessons in every year group
  • A clear progression from Early Years to Year 6
  • Whole-school themes explored each half term
  • Lessons adapted to be age-appropriate
  • Safe and supportive classroom environments

Key areas of learning

Across the year, pupils explore six themes (known as “puzzles”):

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Each theme builds on prior learning and supports children’s personal development.

Supporting all learners

  • Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all pupils
  • Sensitive topics are taught in a safe and inclusive way
  • Teachers respond to pupils’ questions and experiences appropriately
  • Additional support is provided where needed

We work closely with families to ensure children feel supported both in school and at home.

What children achieve

By the end of primary school, pupils:
  • Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy
  • Build positive, respectful relationships
  • Know how to stay safe (including online)
  • Understand their role in society
  • Are ready for the next stage of education and life
