Assessments

Primary school assessments are designed to measure a child's progress in key areas of literacy, numeracy, and communication. These assessments are part of the statutory curriculum and are used to inform teaching and learning strategies. 

The assessments include:

  • Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA): A short one-to-one assessment of a pupil’s language, communication, and literacy, and maths level, required for four- and five-year-olds within six weeks of the start of Reception. 
  • Phonics Screening Check: A check at the end of Year 1 to ensure that no pupil falls behind in their reading.
  • Key Stage 1 Sats: Optional assessments in English reading, spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and maths, taken by pupils between Reception and Year 6. 
  • Multiplication tables check: At the end of Year 4, all pupils in maintained schools are required to take the multiplication tables check. A computer-based test used to determine which pupils can fluently recall their times tables (two through to twelve). It consists of 25 questions and takes place during the first two weeks of June.
  • Key Stage 2 Sats: At the end of Year 6, pupils take tests covering: English grammar, punctuation and spelling, English reading, mathematics
